The Contemporary City

From an architectural perspective, Boston is often known for its examples of Federal and Victorian structures. Yet its built environment has continued to evolve, and in recent years, contemporary architecture in Boston has flourished.

While the city boasts innovative and eclectic architecture of all periods, there remains no singular area in Boston to showcase newer edifices. Indeed, many of the most recent buildings can be found distributed throughout the city and surrounding areas, in places such local college campuses and in the Longwood Medical Area.

This tour will hone in on the city's downtown area, offering a sampling of Boston's architecture in the Waterfront neighborhood and Financial District from the past 50 years or so, and will include the works of CBT, Jung Brannen, Philip Johnson, I.M. Pei and Elkus Manfredi.
