Wisdom Walks: Slower-Paced Tours, Stronger Connections

At a time when loneliness and social isolation are reaching crisis levels among older adults, Boston By Foot is offering something simple and powerful: a chance to walk, talk, and connect.
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, loneliness is one of the most urgent public health issues facing older Americans. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, dementia, and early death.
In Boston and beyond, many older adults live alone, have limited mobility, or face barriers to accessing enriching community experiences. Wisdom Walks was created to help address these challenges — offering a low-pressure, high-impact opportunity to connect with others while exploring the city.
Thanks to generous support from Age Strong Boston, Boston By Foot launched Wisdom Walks, a walking tour program created especially for older adults. These tours are slower-paced, conversational, and community-focused, designed to get people moving, thinking, and engaging — with the city and with one another.
Tours take place in areas of the city with level ground and include regular stops for rest, reflection, and conversation. They’re led by trained Boston By Foot volunteers who are as passionate about building human connection as they are about sharing Boston’s layered history.
Wisdom Walks offer more than historical information — they offer a sense of place, purpose, and belonging. The content is designed to spark conversation, encourage memory, and invite storytelling. Participants often share their own experiences, reflect on how neighborhoods have changed, and connect the past to their personal lives.
