Program Description:

This online presentation will provide an overview of the changing construction techniques of Boston’s houses, from the earliest colonial era to the current era. We will look at the interplay between evolving manufacturing technologies, changes to the labor force, building codes, and zoning (in later eras), and how those changes affected the way workers built houses.

Although the focus will not be on architectural styles per se, there are some styles which only became possible with the advent of new building techniques and materials. Houses (and later on apartments) will be the main topic but there is some overlap with commercial buildings.
