Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access

As we consider how our programming fulfills our values and shares Boston’s diverse stories, Boston By Foot is proud to have a team that is deeply committed to thorough research and is curious about uncovering and sharing lesser-known narratives. At the same time, we recognize that this research and exploration require a thoughtful approach. We are asking ourselves challenging questions: How do we embrace our role as educators and interpreters of Boston’s - and America’s - complex and layered history? How do we best support our volunteers as we review our programming and ensure we are sharing stories of Boston’s many neighborhoods and communities? How do we expand to attract and retain volunteers who can provide new perspectives? How can we strengthen partnerships with organizations throughout the city to help us connect to communities we do not currently serve? How will we need to adapt our current programs or add programs to our portfolio to better meet our mission?

Answering these questions and addressing these challenges will take time and require a large investment of staff and volunteer resources. To focus our efforts, Boston By Foot has assembled a cross organizational team of staff, volunteers and trustees devoted to IDEA - Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access. This acronym was chosen because it puts ‘inclusion’ first and includes ‘access’, an important component of our work to inspire and provide tours to all. This team is tasked with ensuring IDEA principles are at the forefront of everything we do and that we are living our organizational values.
