Program Description:
Join Kalimah Redd Knight, President of The League of Women for Community Service (LWCS), for an exploration of one of the nation’s oldest Black women’s service organizations.
LWCS was founded in the early 20th century by Maria Baldwin, an educator and civil rights activist, to provide a variety of social services for Boston’s African American community. This presentation will highlight the League’s historic legacy, efforts to restore its iconic headquarters at 558 Massachusetts Avenue, and its vision for the future. Through stories of the founders, an overview of archival materials , and insights into current and future goals, discover how LWCS continues to empower communities and celebrate Black and women’s history.
Presenter Bio:
Kalimah Redd Knight is president of the Board of The League of Women for Community Service (LWCS), one of the oldest continuing Black women’s service organizations in the United States. LWCS serves as the nexus of education and the celebration of community, culture, and the legacy of Black and women’s history in Boston and beyond.
In addition to serving on the LWCS Board, Kalimah has more than 25 years of professional experience in media and public relations. She currently serves as senior deputy director of media relations of Tufts University where she focuses on producing high-visibility and high-impact media placements about faculty scholarship, university programming, and student accomplishments, as well as support of issues management.
Prior to Tufts, Kalimah was a public relations manager at Simmons University and a newspaper reporter at a number of outlets, including the Boston Globe.
