Program Description:
Twelfth Baptist Church stands as a cornerstone of Boston's religious and spiritual heritage. Founded in 1805 as the African Baptist Church on Beacon Hill, its legacy spans three different sanctuary buildings throughout the city. The congregation holds particular historical significance as the spiritual home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who served as Assistant Minister while pursuing his doctorate in theology at Boston University.
In 1957, the congregation moved to its current home at 160 Warren Street in Roxbury, taking over the former Advent Christian Church building. While subsequent renovation projects over the decades diminished much of the structure's historic character, recent years have brought renewed focus on preservation.
Facing building deterioration, the church undertook a comprehensive investigation and restoration project to return the facade to its historic appearance. Join us to explore this recently completed transformation, including the detailed investigative process and the key preservation decisions that shaped the final restoration.
