Program Description:
In a city as old as Boston, hidden history is all around us. Join us to uncover the story of an unassuming residence in Roxbury that was recently discovered to be the site of a grand stable that once housed Royal Governor William Shirley’s prized horses, and the enslaved men who cared for them.
Suzy Buchanan, Executive Director of the Shirley-Eustis House Association, will share the complex history of Shirley Place—once a sprawling country estate and symbol of political power—and how a combination of scholarship and careful inspection led to the 2022 identification of the stable’s remnants.
This talk will also highlight ongoing efforts to transform the stable into a space for programs and exhibitions that illuminate the lives of the enslaved individuals who lived and worked on the site. Join us to reflect on these powerful stories and their lasting impact on our understanding of the past and its relevance today.
